Lactation Consultations
What Is a Lactation Consultation?
A lactation consultation is a personalized session with a breastfeeding expert designed to help you prepare for breastfeeding or troubleshoot challenges after your baby arrives. Whether you're still pregnant or already postpartum, a lactation consultation offers guidance, support, and real-time solutions so you can feed your baby with more ease and confidence.

What Can an IBCLC Do for You?
An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is the highest credentialed professional in breastfeeding care.
They are trained to help you:
During Pregnancy (Prenatal Consult)
Prepare mentally and physically for breastfeeding
Understand how milk production works
Learn what to expect in the first days postpartum
Identify any potential risk factors that may affect your milk supply or latch
Develop a customized feeding plan and support network
After Baby Arrives (Postpartum Consult)
Ensure a deep and pain-free latch
Troubleshoot nipple pain, low supply, oversupply, or engorgement
Assess baby's milk transfer and weight gain
Create pumping plans (especially for NICU, returning to work, or exclusive pumping)
Provide emotional support and encouragement when you're overwhelmed or unsure
In-Person vs. Virtual Lactation Consultations
In-Person Consults
These are typically held in your home or a clinic and allow hands-on support, such as:
Direct observation of latching and positioning
Weighing the baby before and after feeding
Physical assessments of baby’s mouth, tongue, and mom’s breasts
Best if:
You're dealing with complex challenges (e.g. tongue-tie concerns, poor weight gain)
You prefer someone physically present to guide you
Virtual Consults
Offered via secure video call and can be just as effective for many common breastfeeding concerns. You’ll get:
Real-time coaching and troubleshooting
Step-by-step visual guidance with your phone or camera
The convenience of staying home—especially ideal for new moms recovering from birth
Best if:
You need immediate help but don’t want to leave the house
You’re managing mild-to-moderate concerns and want expert guidance quickly
How to Prepare for Your Consultation
Make a list of questions or concerns, including how feedings have been going, how baby is latching, or if you're experiencing pain.
Have baby nearby and ready to feed during the consult so the IBCLC can observe a live nursing or bottle-feeding session.
Gather your feeding supplies, such as a breast pump, bottles, nursing pillows, and nipple shields if you're using them.
Write down any feeding logs, weight checks, or pediatrician notes, especially if you’re struggling with weight gain or milk supply.
Whether it’s your first baby or your third, getting support from an IBCLC can make a world of difference. You deserve to feel confident and supported—every step of the way.
